Behind the Design

This commemorative design celebrates the memory of Lonesome George (Chelonoidis abingdonii), a global symbol of the Galápagos and a powerful reminder of the fragility of island life. The illustration features volcanic rocks, cacti, plants, and elements from his natural environment, including vegetation associated with his diet, all brought together in an earthy color palette that reinforces his connection to the island landscape.

At the top, the design references the former 5,000-sucre banknote, which also featured the Galápagos penguin and the flightless cormorant. This visual detail connects the archipelago’s natural history with Ecuador’s cultural memory. More than a tribute to an extinct species, this design seeks to represent the resilience, uniqueness, and irreplaceable value of Galápagos wildlife, inviting us to remember, reflect, and protect what is still alive.

We believe that even everyday objects can be designed more consciously.

That is why we chose paper made from sugarcane fiber, incorporating an alternative material to conventional paper and making use of fiber derived from an agricultural by-product.

We also designed the journal to be durable and long-lasting, because extending the useful life of a product is an important part of how we understand more responsible consumption.
