Behind the Design

The manta ray (Mobula birostris) inspires this amigurumi with its broad, elegant silhouette that seems to fly beneath the water. Hand-crocheted, it offers a simple and charming representation of the beauty and serenity of one of the ocean’s great inhabitants.
Description

Small handwoven characters that transform Ecuador’s biodiversity into pieces full of color, texture, and personality.

Our amigurumi are made one by one using the crochet technique by artisans from the Mujer y Medio Ambiente Artisan Association, made up mainly of women from Plaza Gutiérrez and nearby communities in Intag, in the province of Imbabura.

Each piece carries hours of handwork, patience, and creativity, turning every animal into something special that connects nature, design, and traditional craftsmanship.
Materials & Sustainability

Each amigurumi is carefully crocheted by hand, gradually building every shape, volume, and detail until the character comes to life.

Production takes place in collaboration with women artisans from the Mujer y Medio Ambiente Artisan Association, many of whom live in Plaza Gutiérrez and other communities in the Intag region of Imbabura.

There is no industrial production line behind these pieces. Each one literally passes through the hands of an artisan, making small differences in the stitching, shape, and finishing part of its unique character.

The exact composition of the yarn and filling should be confirmed before publishing the final product information.
Impact

Behind every amigurumi there is much more than a handmade object.

This collection allows us to work directly with women artisans from Intag, many of them older women, recognizing skills they have developed over many years and creating opportunities for them to transform their knowledge, craftsmanship, and creativity into a source of income.

Through this collaboration, we aim to ensure that part of the value created by 593 Origins also reaches small communities, promoting fairly paid work, handcrafted production, and a more equitable distribution of opportunities.

Each piece therefore represents a small chain of human work: designed to celebrate our biodiversity and created by Ecuadorian hands.
Care Instructions

Use mild detergent.
Do not use bleach or abrasive cleaning products.
Do not soak for extended periods.
Avoid rubbing, twisting, or wringing forcefully to prevent deformation.
Remove excess water by gently pressing with a towel.
Allow to air dry completely, preferably laid flat and in the shade.
Do not tumble dry.
Do not iron.
Avoid sharp objects or rough surfaces that may snag the crochet.
Store only when completely dry to help preserve its shape and finish.
As each piece is handmade, handle with care to protect its details and stitching.
