Galápagos giant tortoises are far more than one of the archipelago’s great symbols: for centuries, they have helped shape the ecosystems they inhabit. As they move across the land, open pathways, feed on vegetation, and disperse seeds, they act as true engineers of the landscape, helping maintain the natural dynamics of the islands.
Their diversity can also be read in the shape of their shells. In wetter areas, where food is abundant near the ground, dome-shaped forms occur, such as Chelonoidis porteri, native to Santa Cruz. Its rounded shell accompanies a robust body adapted to environments with grasses and low vegetation. On drier islands, saddleback forms evolved, with the front of the shell raised higher, along with longer necks and limbs—features that make it easier to reach taller cactus and shrubs.
One of the best-known examples was Chelonoidis abingdonii, the giant tortoise of Pinta. Its last known individual, Lonesome George, died in 2012 and became a powerful global symbol of extinction and conservation. Its saddleback shell represented an extreme adaptation to an arid environment.
Giant tortoises can live for many decades, and their slow pace contrasts with the enormous impact they have on the territory. But their story has also been shaped by historical hunting, introduced species, and habitat transformation. Today, conserving them means protecting not only extraordinary animals, but also the ecological processes that have shaped Galápagos for thousands of years.
