The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is the largest fish in the world and, at the same time, one of the ocean’s gentlest giants. Its enormous body, covered in a pattern of pale spots and lines, moves slowly through the water as it filters plankton, small fish, and other tiny organisms.
Galápagos holds a special place in the story of this species. Around Darwin Island, especially between July and November, large whale sharks appear, and most of the individuals observed are adult females. Many have visibly distended abdomens, a feature that has led scientists to investigate whether these waters may form part of routes connected to reproduction.
Their time in the archipelago is only one chapter in much longer journeys. Satellite tracking has shown that whale sharks can leave Galápagos and travel great distances across the Eastern Pacific, moving through protected areas, international waters, and the coasts of other countries. This ability to travel also reveals their vulnerability: beyond marine reserves, they may face accidental capture and collisions with vessels.
Encountering a whale shark changes the scale of the ocean. Beside it, humans seem small and the sea feels immense again. Its presence is a sign of the richness the ocean still holds. Today, the species is classified as Endangered, and protecting it means understanding that the ocean has no borders: conserving Galápagos also requires protecting the routes that connect its waters with the rest of the Pacific.
