The Galápagos albatross (Phoebastria irrorata) is the bird with the largest wingspan in the archipelago and one of its most impressive inhabitants. Its wings stretch approximately 2 to 2.5 meters from tip to tip, a remarkable adaptation that allows it to travel vast distances over the ocean, using the wind to glide efficiently for long periods.
Its story is deeply connected to Española Island. Almost the entire global population returns there each year to breed, mainly between April and December. Before forming a pair, these albatrosses perform an elaborate courtship ritual: they clack their long yellow bills together, bow their heads, make distinctive sounds, and synchronize their movements in an almost choreographed dance. Pairs form long-lasting bonds, and both adults take part in caring for their chick.
Outside the breeding season, they leave Española and travel across the eastern Pacific, especially through waters off Ecuador and Peru, where they find productive feeding grounds. Their diet includes fish, squid, and crustaceans. This life between land and sea makes the albatross an extraordinary ocean traveler.
But this specialization also makes the species vulnerable. Because it depends on an extremely limited breeding area, any disturbance can have serious consequences. Accidental capture in fisheries, changes in ocean conditions, and other pressures have led the species to be classified as Critically Endangered. Watching one take flight from the cliffs of Española is to witness a bird built to travel immense distances, yet whose survival depends on protecting one very specific place on Earth.
